  • Hello!

Welcome to the Tatum Photo and Design blog. This is where we feature some of our favorite sessions, notes from our clients and even some photography tips.

Tatum Photo and Design offers clients modern, editorial-style images and photoshoots. To us, photography is art. And, you're our subject. Our specialty is senior and wedding photography in Northern Michigan (although, we love to travel for destination clients!). After you've browsed, feel free to contact Tatum Photo and Design to book a session!

Whew! We’ve been busy editing, but wanted to take a moment to share a gorgeous wedding we had the pleasure of shooting this summer in Traverse City, MI.

I first met Ashleigh and Steve last summer at their engagement session. I could tell right away they were going to be a really fun couple!

Ashleigh and Steve were married at the historic Old Mission Church in Old Mission, MI. Tatum Photo and Design was there to capture Ashleigh as she was getting ready, and we met Steve and his groomsmen at the church later that afternoon…traverse city mi wedding ring picturestraverse city mi ring detail picturetraverse city mi bride phototraverse city mi bridal photographerold mission church mi wedding photosContinue reading “Ashleigh & Steve {Traverse City, MI Centerpointe Marina Wedding}” »

This season, I’ve been getting lots of emails and phone calls about boys senior photography. Where girls usually embrace the multiple outfit changes, fancy hair and makeup and the general thrill of senior photos, boys can be a bit more of a challenge.

In most cases, senior boys hate (or like to act like they hate) getting their photos taken. So, when I get a phone call from Mom scheduling her son to get his senior photos taken, the conversation usually starts with something like, “Do you have a package that is only one hour long, because my son won’t want be in front of the camera for longer than that.” LOL

Well, I’m here to reassure Mom. Boys just need a bit of extra attention, but we can get them to nail their senior photo shoot and make sure you have some pictures to help you get through those quickly approaching empty-nest spells.

Some of my tricks…

1. Finding out what some of your son’s greatest interests and hobbies are. Boys don’t often like to pose for the sake of posing, so we like to find out what makes your son who he is. What does he do in his spare time? What are his passions and goals beyond high school? Making sure his favorite things are represented in his photos can make all the difference. And, we usually leverage this a bit. The conversation goes something like, “Okay. We’ll do the poses with your hunting rifle first, but then we have to do some in the blue shirt for Grandma.” This strategy works pretty well 🙂

As you may expect, summers are our busy-season when it comes to Northern Michigan wedding photography. The gorgeous lake. The breathtaking natural scenery. Our quaint, little towns with drawbridges, sailboats and fudge shops on every corner. People come from all around to see Northern Michigan in July. But, there are few visitors brave enough to face our Northern Michigan winters. So, when I got a call last year to book an outdoor wedding at the end of January, needless to say, my calendar was pretty clear.

Stephanie and Tim planned a GORGEOUS winter wedding at Castle Farms in Charlevoix, MI. I was lucky enough to also shoot their engagement session. The fact that they’re both Spartan grads was apparent in their engagement shoot—and then on into their wedding details.

We started the day off at the drawbridge in downtown Charlevoix for the couple’s first look before the ceremony and festivities started. Let me say, winter wedding photography can be a bit tricky. Northern Michigan winters tend to hit the subzero temperatures, and no matter how high quality your equipment, it’s just simply not built to function for long hours in those kinds of temperatures.

Step 1: Forget how you professional you look—put on the thicky, furry boots.

Step 2: Rotate out your camera bodies to keep them from freezing.

Step 3: Long underwear. Lots of long underwear. And SO many hand warmers.

Back to Tim and Stephanie! The first look was such a cute moment between the couple. I love when couples take the time to do this. It’s such a personal, intimate moment, and this couple was no exception (as you can see from Tim’s priceless expression).

Wedding season is in full swing at Tatum Photo and Design! And while we are editing until our fingers can’t move, we are also responding to e-mails as quickly as we can. Lately, I have had quite a few e-mails asking if we offer military discounts and I thought I would address this quickly through a blog post.

The answer is YES!

We enthusiastically offer United States Military discounts as well as emergency personnel discounts. I know that isn’t very standard, but my husband has been a Firefighter since we have been together. Watching him burst out of bed in the wee hours of the night to run into a burning building and then turn around have to work all day/night made me want to honor those who risk their lives on a more local level as well. We really respect those who are willing to sacrifice time with their families, their sleep and their lives simply to keep us safe.

We offer a 10% discount to all service members as well as emergency personnel. This includes the coast guard and all branches of the military, and all first responders (police officers, EMT, paramedics, firefighters, etc…)

We have been working so hard on our new look and we could not be more excited that it is finally DONE! HOORAY! Here’s a little tour of our new site!

Our website is: tatumphotodesign.com

We love our welcome page. The sliders have previews from a wedding, senior and engagement session that we absolutely loved! Choosing images for the front page was the hardest. We love so many of our clients, trying to find images was the hardest part for me. I have a feeling we’ll be rotating these out often. Haha!

Click on the Portfolio page to be directed to our portfolio landing page. Here you’ll be able to find access to all of the different galleries we have available! We are still beefing up the different galleries we have posted with more images, but we love this layout. Images will slide in each gallery on an auto slider. You can grab the slider to move ahead if you want to as well.
